Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS): Opening the Possibilities for Deeper Learning and Assessment

This white paper outlines approaches to the teaching of science based on the NGSS, as well as an overview of some of the challenges. It also provides an orientation to some helpful content and technology resources and recommendations for easing the challenges of NGSS assessments. These include building device and delivery system agnostic digital content based on open standards (QTI 2.X, APIP, and QTI-PCI). This facilitates their use across the educational environment, allows easy integration with existing QTI content libraries, and simplifies the delivery of content to students across multiple devices. In addition, you’ll discover:

  • The two things NGSS no longer consider to be sufficient
  • What is three-dimensional learning (3DL) and how to integrate it
  • National Research Council of the National Academies’ recommendations on meeting NGSS requirements
