01 | PERFORMANCE

Reading fell 10 points across OECD countries

Between 2018 and 2022, average reading performance across OECD countries fell by 10 points, while mathematics fell by almost 15 points. PISA 2025 will provide a critical indication of whether education systems are beginning to recover.

02 | EQUITY

Disadvantaged students were 7× more likely to fall below basic maths proficiency

Socio-economic background remained strongly associated with achievement. Across OECD countries, disadvantaged students were seven times more likely than advantaged students not to reach basic proficiency in mathematics.

03 | DIGITAL LEARNING

30% of students reported distraction from digital devices

Around 30% of students across OECD countries reported being distracted by digital devices in most or every mathematics lesson. The findings reinforce that effective digital learning depends on how technology is used, not simply whether it is available.

Some education systems bucked the global decline

The overall decline was not universal. Some education systems maintained strong performance, equity and student well-being despite disruption, highlighting the importance of system resilience, policy choices and learning conditions.
